The Value Of Clemmensen At The Trade Deadline

from Mark Everson of the NY Post,
It could be a major temptation for Lou Lamoriello, but at the March 4 trade deadline he’ll likely pass on picking up a significant piece of loot.
He’ll probably have to resist renting Scott Clemmensen to the highest bidder, unable to depend on an immediate and full contribution by Martin Brodeur Martin Brodeur , who would barely be back in action by then….
The Devils could likely demand significant bounty for Clemmensen, perhaps even a first-rounder from an injury-struck contender, as he heads toward certain summertime departure as an unrestricted free agent.

Really, Everson has fallen off his rocker here. Just another idiot hockey writer employed by the Post. (I’m looking at you, Brooks.)

Picking up a 1st for Clemmer would be a dream for Devils fans. Unfortunately, It’s not remotely rooted in reality. No “contending” team would give up a 1st or a good prospect or two for a guy who has never started a NHL playoff game and is in his first real NHL season, and who still has holes in his game. His rebound control is pretty poor, and while he’s played very well in front of an overachieving Devils team defense, his weaknesses are too big to overlook.
There are way too many goaltenders of similar ability for a team to cough up a high pick or a valuable package for 20 games of Scott freaking Clemmensen.
Last year, Bryzgalov was put on waivers, and Huet was traded for a 2nd at the deadline. Biron was traded for a 2nd a couple years ago. Those guys had far better resumes. So if Clemmensen kept up his high level of play-which is a big question mark at this point-then maybe a 2nd round pick would be more reasonable. Then Lou would have a tougher decision, but I think it would end up being the same. Take the pick, because you’re not going deep in the playoffs without Marty anyway.
