The Value Of Lundqvist

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
At this point, Lundqvist, Washington winger Alex Ovechkin and Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf are the three select Group IIs yet unsigned to extensions. The Rangers cannot formally begin talks with Lundqvist until the calendar turns to 2008, and when it does, they will. And when they do, they will have no choice but to accede to their 25-year-old franchise goaltender’s demands. They won’t even be able to protect Lundqvist from receiving an offer sheet by filing against him for arbitration, because they did that last summer, even though they didn’t go through with the process.
What is Lundqvist, who can become an unrestricted free agent after next season, worth to the Rangers? He’s worth pretty much any dollar amount he and agent Don Meehan request.

They have to sign Lundqvist, and if it means that Jagr has to go at the end of the season to make it happen, so be it. They did overpay for both Gomez and Drury though, considering they both wanted to play for the Rangers. I’m sure they could have gotten both of them for $1 million less per season.

They don’t need two over-priced No. 1 centers though when they could have just kept Nylander, who clicked with Jagr and signed a good No. 2 center to complement him and still have the money to re-sign their key guys.

Brooks really makes it clear how much Sather has tied up this team’s cap space in two big-money centers. I think he should have just re-signed Nylander who had chemistry with Jagr, but even if he wanted to sign Gomez or Drury, couldn’t he have just gotten one of them? I don’t see how, with both those guys still on the cap, Sather will be able to re-sign Lundqvist, Jagr, and Avery.
