The Weighted Scale

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

“Gary Bettman made it very clear that I was going to be one of the players watched with a second eye,” said Hollweg, whose suspension was automatic for having been assessed a third game-misconduct this season. “I know they have my number, I know I’m being watched, but what does that have to do with it when I get hit in the face by an elbow?

“It shouldn’t matter who it is. If I do something to another player or if another player does something to me, it should be judged on the same scale.”

Hollweg is an idiot. Yes, the punishment should fit the crime, but past transgressions will play a part, too. The league has to do whatever it can to protect the players and the game, and if a player has a history of dirty play, they must step in and do whatever it takes to prevent that player from continuing to put others at risk.

As for the elbow to the face, it probably should have been a penalty, but the refs missed it. In my opinion, the video shows it to be unintentional--Kovalev was just trying to finish his check and Hollweg happened to be in a strange position so his face lined up with Kovalev’s arm. Hollweg’s hit on the younger Kostitsyn was radically different. Kostitsyn didn’t turn his back at the last second as we’ve seen in some other hits that garnered suspension; instead, Kostitsyn wasn’t even moving, and Hollweg skated all the way across the ice to hit him from behind into the boards.

Until now, I’ve been a fan of Hollweg’s inspired play, but his stupidity on how the league should react to violence is surprising.

Saw the game and both hits. Both were bad. Kovalev should have gotton a game too. My biggest problem with the whole thing, don’t go after a little guy. Be a man and stand up, drop the gloves, and settle with the guy who made the hit (Kovalev). Note to the K-man-if you’re gonna throw shots like that-be prepared to drop’em. Otherwise the cheap shot is coming your way.

I disagree with him that his hit on Kostitsyn wasn’t dangerous or a hit from behind.  But he’s completely right that how he plays should not have an effect on how the refs make their calls.  Kovalev got his elbow up--definitely a penalty (and probably intentional given that they had just bumped 5 seconds earlier).

As for Hollweg “picking on the little guy,” S. Kostitsyn is 5’11” and 196lbs.  Hollweg is 5’11” and 210lbs.  Not a huge difference there.
