The Word Finally Came

from Ray Ferraro at TSN,
We met in the morning to walk over to the arena, Landon wearing a different suit and hoping for a quick selection.
Sometimes you look back at an event and realize its significance only in retrospect. With the 29th pick Friday night, Detroit traded down three spots to No. 32. They acquired a 3rd round pick to move down, and 10 minutes after getting into the arena Saturday morning, we heard words I had dreamt about many times watching my son chase his dream.
Ken Holland was at the microphone and said “with the 32nd pick, the Detroit Red Wings select, from the Western Hockey League’s Red Deer Rebels - Landon Ferraro.”
When I write those words, I still have tears in my eyes.

I’m sorry...but the fact that the Red Wings traded down and selected an American/Canadian means this draft class is pretty weak. Not to mention the fact that the penguins got caught up on last names of former players. Okay...maybe I just don’t like ferraros, but it’s semi-true.

Yes, drafting lower has killed the Wings in the past, for sure.

@ stoneman -
Detroit didn’t have a 4th round pick because of the Stuart deal with Los Angeles, so by trading the pick to Tampa they gained another 3rd round pick and since Tampa was so high in the round by flipping from the first to second round they only really moved down a few places and still got one of the players they wanted.
I believe that Gary Bettman wasn’t at the second day of the draft, either, so as a side effect no one from the Red Wings appeared on the podium with the commish.

The whole damn thing is a sport/corporate crap shoot. There are hundreds of first round busts and 3rd round heroes… Who cares enough to squabble about it until the whole pans out?

I can think of at least 19 people…
Congrats to Landon (even though I hate that name) and pappa Ray. I only wish I knew what that experience feels like.

Nice story. It’s sometimes easy to forget that despite the nice suits and the maturity, these are just kids and it’s a stressful experience waiting without any control over what the teams do. Maybe even more so for the parents than the young men themselves.
Fortunate for Landon and the Ferraro family that the suspense ended quickly on the second day. Good luck to him.
