from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
Theo Fleury is ready to tell the world what many suspected for years: He was sexually abused by Graham James.
The Sun has learned the explosive revelation is detailed in his tell-all book, Playing with Fire, which will be released next week.
Fleury will join Sheldon Kennedy as the second player to go public with the sort of allegations that led to a 31/2-year prison sentence for the disgraced junior hockey coach after Kennedy stepped forward in the fall of 1996, telling police he was abused more than 350 times.
from Garth Woolsey of the Toronto Star,
While the 5-foot-6 forward has scaled the heights of hockey stardom, including a Stanley Cup triumph with the Calgary Flames and an Olympic medal with Canada’s national team, he has also plumbed the depths of depravity and addiction.
“I think that people have to understand why. What it was that made me do what I did,” he says in an advance quote he reportedly gave to the U.S. publisher of his new tell-all book Playing With Fire, due to be released on Wednesday.
“I knew I was crazy insane and so did everyone else,” writes Fleury, 41, who finally packed in his pro playing career on Sept. 28, after a failed comeback attempt with the Flames that captivated hockey fans everywhere.
“I didn’t hang out on the surface. I would go five, six, seven, eight levels below the streets of New York and party with people I didn’t know. Freaks, transvestites, all kinds of shady people,” he writes, with reference to his time with the New York Rangers, who employed him for three seasons, 1999-2002.
Pre-orders of ‘Playing With Fire’ are being taken at Amazon.com (affiliate link).
