from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
This, for some reason, reminds me of a summer conversation I had with a general manager in which I suggested that I didn’t see the distinction between Henrik Zetterberg’s heavily front-loaded long-term contract that received the NHL’s blessing and Marian Hossa’s, Chris Pronger’s and Roberto Luongo’s similar deals that are under league investigation.
“Ah, but there’s a significant difference and I’m surprised you don’t see it,” the GM said. “Zetterberg plays for the Red Wings.”
So then, knee injury to a Red Wing, five games; brain injury to a Ranger, three games.
Got it.
more notes from Larry including why it is time to end the shootout…

Cry me a river Larry. Sounds like sour grapes. Ken Holland just happens to be better at the game than the other GM/Clowns in the league. Get over it you sissy.

Everyone talks as if the Zetterberg deal was the first lifetime contract, but Lecavalier’s is basically the same and came earlier.
And for what it’s worth, here’s the difference:
Lecavalier’s contract lasts until he’s 39.
Zetterberg’s contract lasts until he’s 39.
Franzen’s contract lasts until he’s 39.
Hossa’s contract lasts until he’s 41.
Pronger’s contract lasts until he’s 40.
For whatever reason, 40’s the magic number for the league office.

And I forgot Luongo, whose contract lasts until he’s 43.

Hey Larry, is that anything like how a mediocre player on Broadway is more-hyped than an actual good player anywhere else, simply because they’re playing on home ice at MSG?

This is hilarious. Obviously, this guy hasn’t seen the Wings play against either Dallas or Calgary this month, nor does he even know who Tomas Holmstrom is. What’s puzzling to me, is that Sean Avery plays in the same town that this (so called) journalist writes. I hope this guy gets that lump removed from on top of his neck.

Larry keeps talking about how boring the shoot-out is but doesn’t even give a reason why. Watching guys like Datsyuk, Zetterberg, etc is awesome to show their deking skills. I’d sooner watch a shootout then an entire baseball game (no offence but that’s boring)

I don’t think it matters nearly as much that Zetterberg is a Red Wing as that Detroit was one of the first teams to start signing players to long-term contracts with cheap add-on years to reduce the cap hit. As a once-in-a-while deal, the league didn’t care - once many other teams started doing exactly the same thing, then they got annoyed at the teams getting around the rules they set up.
How dare they all actually use the loopholes that were provided.
If they don’t like it, tough. They wrote the rules; they should live with them without all the whining.
