They Can Still Play, But Where Is The Question

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
The news that Petr Sykora will attend the Minnesota Wild camp on a tryout basis is symbolic of the dilemma facing all the veteran NHL players that didn’t get a contract offer this summer, and opted not to play overseas in Russia:
Do they swallow their pride and - with no guarantees - try to earn a roster spot for the first time in forever? Or do they sit at home and await a firm deal and bide their time that way?

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

I recall a time where players retired before teams considered them dead weight...that was a while ago. See: Belfour, Joseph, Kolzig, Roberts, Roenick, Shanahan, Satan, Cloutier, Hasek, etc.
Does sykora have gas in the tank? Maybe. But like a lot of veterans he’s a one dimensional player in a 2d (at least) world [have to play offense, defense, and a little bit of goalie (ie blocking shots)] maybe he nets 20 goals next year if he plays but the point is: WHY NOT GO OUT ON TOP? You know...instead of being a walk on to a team that won’t even sign you outright for under 1 mil.
Hockey used to be a game of dignity and self respect, apparently it’s not there anymore.
