My Vancouver spies insist that Trevor Linden will play a significant role of some kind in the flame lead-up at the 2010 opening ceremony and I sure hope that’s not true. Linden’s presence does not resonate outside Vancouver and if he’s significant in this, it will make the organizing committee look small and all too local. This is a world, international event, not a celebration of the rather inept history of the Canucks

EVERY location hosting an Olympics chooses some figures that are very important in the national or local history, regardless of how recognized they are in other places.
If Simmons doesn’t like it, then work to get his local region the Olympics and then he can petition for as many internationally recognized faces and not local ones that he wants.

Steve Simmons is a fraking idiot at the best of times. Loud mouthed, opinionated arse. He’s also the champion of parochialism usually, never notices there is a wider world than the 416 area code. Trevor Linden is a legend in Vancouver, Vancouver is the host of the Olympics. What more need be said here?

What an idiot. Why should he care if Linden is involved in some of the ceremonies. If Dougie Gilmore was involved, this guy would be pissing his pants in anticipation.
The Olympics are in Vancouver, and if they pick some athletes who have been highly involved in the city’s sports history (and the Canucks’ dismall overall record has no bearing, this is the Olympics), then why not. A significant part of the audience will be from BC, why shouldn’t they pick someone who would popular with them.
