from Matt Burt of TSN,
...But despite all the noise about the captaincy (or lack thereof), Marleau said he was not under the impression he was on his way out of San Jose.
“It hasn’t been expressed to me that way so I can’t really speculate on what’s happening in the back but as far as I know, no, it’s not going to transpire that way,” said Marleau, who will make $6 million in this, the final season under his current contract.
Thornton defended Marleau’s tenure as captain and reasserted that, by the time the puck drops on the Sharks’ regular season on October 1st, there Marleau could very well be wearing that same “C” on his jersey once again.
much more on the Sharks…
added 9:42pm, from David Pollak of Working the Corners at the Mercury News,
Occasionally, when you think you’ve wasted a little energy and a lot of time chasing down a baseless Internet rumor, there turns out to be a payoff after all.
Like today and this quote from Doug Wilson: “Patrick Marleau has not been asked to waive his no-trade clause.”
That statement — more definitive than the Sharks general manager has been in the past — came in response to a question after this one sentence showed up on what appears to be the Orange County Register’s web site: “A proposed three-team trade that would have sent Ottawa’s Dany Heatley to San Jose fell through when Sharks captain Patrick Marleau refused to waive his no-trade clause.”
added 9:51pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail at CTV Olympics,
One NHL source indicated yesterday the Sharks and Senators did discuss a possible deal for Heatley, but San Jose’s preference was to move former 50-goal scorer Jonathan Cheechoo in any trade, another player who looks as if he needs a fresh start.
It appears as though Marleau is safe for at least another year. Not his captaincy.
much more from the first day of camp for Team Canada…
