Guest writer Erin Nicks is covering the NHL Entry Draft in Ottawa for Kukla’s Korner this weekend.

Those concerned about Ottawa picking up some grit in this year’s draft will need to dig deep into Round 5, when the club (after much apparent hemming and hawing) selected defenceman Mark Borowiecki with the 139th pick.
Hockey’s Future describes the Kanata native as “very physical along the boards with good speed and agility.” As a member of the Smiths Falls Bears, Borowiecki was selected as the top blueliner in the CJHL in 2007-08, and is signed to a scholarship at Clarkson beginning in September.
You’d figure that any player is happy to be selected at the entry draft, but what if you’re a member of a famous family, and you’re the only one who wasn’t selected in the first round?
That’s the situation Jared Staal found himself in this afternoon at Scotiabank Place, when the youngest of the brothers from Thunder Bay was taken 49th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes. By comparison, eldest sibling Eric was taken 2nd overall in ’03, Marc went 12th in ’05, and Jordan was also a 2nd overall selection in ’06.
Make no mistake – the media have taken notice. Overheard backstage as a potential opening question for the youngest Staal: “So Jared, why do you suck?” Ouch.
Worthy of note: Derek Stepan, taken by the New York Rangers with the 54th pick overall, claims that if he would be a tap dancer if he weren’t playing hockey. Lucky for Derek – he’ll have Broadway right nearby if things with the Rangers don’t pan out.
