from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
With every passing day, with each improbable win, with each surprising rung climbed up the NHL standings, the nervousness builds for the Atlanta Thrashers.
Will he sign?
Each passing day brings this beleaguered NHL franchise closer to a crossroads, to a truly defining moment.
Either captain Ilya Kovalchuk will sign a long-term contract extension, or he will be put on the open market and sold to the highest bidder in advance of the March 3 trade deadline.

Atlanta’s system is a wide open offensive system. Defensemen always have the green light to join the rush. Also, their home record is mediocre. Their away record is very good.
Who knows if Atlanta’s good fortunes will continue. That’s why they play the games.

It’s always nice to see people opposed to prognostication.
Kind of like watching an Amish family driving their horse-drawn cart along the side of a road. It looks incredibly peaceful, but I’d never in a million years want to live that kind of life.

Um, Atlanta’s played 14 of their first 25 at home and they’re only in the playoffs by 3 or 4 points. They give up the second most shots in the NHL, and are only where they are because their goalies are playing out of their head and Maxim freaking Afinogenov is playing at a point per game pace.
The schedule, the goalies, and Afinogenov are not going to be as complimentary for the remainder of the year.
