Thrashers Bet On Kovalchuk

from Ben Wright of Blueland Blog,

We have a captain! Following the player introductions here at Casino Night Don Waddell presented Ilya Kovalchuk with a new jersey- one with a C on it. After consulting with the alternate captains and coaching staff it was decided that Ilya will serve as the Thrashers team captain.

It won’t keep him happy. He wants out. The Rangers are in store.

Kovalchuck to the Rangers is even worse than Kovalchuck to the Penguins.
The Rangers only have 1.7 million cap space right now, and would have to magically find a bunch in order to just afford him for this season, but he’s also under contract for next season. Well incase you didn’t know, the Rangers have over half their team reaching UFA or RFA status after this season, so good luck affording all that.

He wants out.

On what authority do you know this?

Oh, right. You’re a fan of your team, so you magically “know” he would rather play with the Rangers/Penguins/Oilers/Canadiens/insert your team here.

Baloney. Whether he gets moved or not will be decided by next trade deadline. Wipe your chin, the drool is unsightly—especially for a meal you may not even get to see.

Alan,

He’s given a couple of interviews in which one can reasonably infer that he is at least thinking about it. In one I remember reading that he is getting tired of watching the playoffs from home. One the other hand, he’s also said that he and his family likes atlanta. Whether he stays or goes just depends on how tired he is on playing for an organization that shows no signs its likely to improve anytime soon. And giving him the captaincy might just be just a short-term band aid.

IMO, Atlanta really needs to get rid of Waddel and get somebody in there who knows what they are doing. He’s been there since their inception and have what, 4 playoff games to show for it. That shouldn’t be good enough, particularly to a new ownership group.
