NEW YORK (October 13, 2008) – Vancouver Canucks forward Daniel Sedin, Florida Panthers left wing David Booth and New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for the week ending October 12.
FIRST STAR – DANIEL SEDIN, F, VANCOUVER CANUCKS
Sedin led all scorers with five points (two goals, three assists) in two games as the Canucks opened the season with consecutive victories over division-rival Calgary. In Vancouver’s home opener, Oct. 9, Sedin recorded three assists as the Canucks blanked the Flames, 6-0. On Oct. 11, in the return match at Calgary, Sedin scored twice in a 5-4 overtime win. The two goals gave Sedin a career total of 150.
SECOND STAR – DAVID BOOTH, LW, FLORIDA PANTHERS
Booth tied for second among all scorers with four points (three goals, one assist) in two games. He opened the season by recording one goal and one assist in a 6-4 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct 10. Two nights later, Booth scored two goals, including the overtime winner as the Panthers defeated the Atlanta Thrashers, 3-2. The Detroit native is in his third season with Florida after being selected 53rd overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
THIRD STAR – MARTIN BRODEUR, G, NEW JERSEY DEVILS
Brodeur posted a 2-0-0 record with a 0.97 goals-against average and .951 save percentage as the Devils opened the season with a pair of 2-1 triumphs. He stopped 25 shots in the Devils’ home opener, a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders Oct. 10. The next night, he made 14 saves in a 2-1 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. The victories improved Brodeur’s career total to 540, pulling him within 11 of matching Patrick Roy’s NHL record.
