Tiger Shows His Teeth

From the AP via International Herald Tribune:

The world’s top golfer appeared via teleconference on Monday, promoting August’s PGA Championship at Oakland Hills in suburban Detroit.  Woods was asked if he was rooting for Detroit or Pittsburgh.

Woods started to laugh, then landed a zinger.

“I don’t really care. Let’s talk about the Dodgers,” the California native said. “I don’t think anybody really watches hockey any more.”

Charming, Tiger.  And you don’t want to get me started on my opinion of televised golf—but fortunately, the NHL’s Frank Brown responded with a lot more class than I would have:

“The National Hockey League has enormous respect for Tiger Woods, for all his accomplishments and for his work with the community. We think he’s a great golfer.”

Excellent response Tiger!

A needed douse of cold-water for the NHL in that answer. Beyond the reality distortion field enveloping hockey fans and media - this is the hard truth that must be faced. Hockey has lost its cachet in this country and no amount of contrived hype will change that. In hindsight its clear to me that the nineties was an aberation - not likely to be repeated. America has seen hockey, examined it and then looked away.

Carlos - well, maybe not a punch in the head. But I hate golf on TV, so it bugged me. smile

ROFL - Thanks for commenting, sunshine. But read the rest of the article. I think you might have missed the point.

ROFL, no one cares about Golf when Tiger isn’t playing, so who is he to talk?

So this Tiger guy plays golf? I guess he’s a retired gent then.

And if ratings are his criteria about what he cares about, then ask him who his favorite Nascar driver is. That sport absolutely trounces his.

If NASCAR is doing that to golf - what has it done to hockey? smile - seeing how hockey trails golf in public mindshare and ratings.

By the way I predict that as with all the SCF games to date - this exciting (for fans) game 5 will still not break the 3 million mark in the USA. Ratings should be about a 1.7 :(

So hockey is a niche sport - tell the world something it doesn’t know.  With the possible exception of football every sport has only a niche and not much more.  It’s too easy to ignore something that a person really has no interest in - I don’t care about basketball, and was only dimly aware that the playoffs were still going on, and that was because one of my co-workers was grumbling about some basketball- related topic and mentioned it.

Woods didn’t have to make a gratuitous cheap shot - he could have mentioned that he didn’t follow hockey and thus wasn’t paying attention, instead of saying no one watches.

(Is he referring to the 28-29 Dodgers with only three wins in their last 10 games?  Might be better off talking about a couple of winning teams even if he doesn’t care about the sport.)

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSERRRRRRRRR

For a pro athlete To dis someone else’s sport is just crap. especially with so many teams hitting the links as we speak, as well as all of the charity golf tournaments hosted by the players.

This is a poor poor response on his part. as if golf isn’t niche…

I hope fans do not let this slide by and hound him with it..

He said what…....! Actually, from a black guy I would expect that response. Hopefully the golf “fans” of Michigan will be on his case come the US Open. I love to watch him whine when someone snaps a picture of him when he’s trying to hit a golf ball….And most golf ratings aren’t much better than hockey when he isn’t playing.

Actually Games 3 and 4 have done well over 4 million viewers on NBC this year. Add the Canadian viewers and it probably is as “popular” as golf.

Tell Tiger 5.8 million people watched the game last nite. Let’s see the Bob Hope Desert Classic beat that…....oh and you can add another 3 million or so in Canada

ratings are so objective these days with break downs in time frames. its funny how are you bragging about this because wwe took the demo away from nhl in the 9-10,10-11 hrs. even the mma beat nhl on saturday night

tiger was telling the truth. it goes back to everything i said about bettman. somehow this guy was able to lose fans for a sport than gain any these days with his stupid gimmick ideas. he destroyed the ora of pentaly shot. even the real hardcore hockey fan would tell you this sport is getting worse and lost intertest in the game. thats why teams like flyers market the fighting and promo’s like ‘back with a vengence’ because they know it sells and fans interested. the league was better when they let obstruction ruled in playoffs and they let stuff go

Hey Flyer Fan…its time for you to dig a hole and jump in it. If you can’t see that the players today are 100 times better than the guys 30 years ago you are completely senile. Bobby Clarke couldn’t play in the NHL today. He was too slow and too small for today’s game. The same can be said for all sports.
