Time To Sell The Thrashers

from Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

It starts at the top. It always starts at the top. I’ve stated this before but it’s worth repeating now more than ever: The Atlanta Spirit should just go ahead and sell the Thrashers because they’re doing a disservice to fans. The owners have shown through their actions that they care about basketball but not about hockey.

I know. The Thrashers signed forward Nik Antropov in free agency for $16 million over four seasons. They acquired defenseman Pavel Kubina, who will make $5 million in the last year of his contract. That must mean something, right?

In the big picture, not really. The Thrashers likely will have a team payroll of about $45 million next season, which projects to be one of the five lowest in the league.

Um, right. Like that has been, or ever would be, a reason for selling a team.

I’m sorry…but I’m going to have to agree…Atlanta is one of those cities that tends to be incredibly fickle and phony when it comes to sports teams.  Like it or not…the Thrashers need to have at least 5 good years to lock in a statistically significant night in night out fan base.
