Times Are Tough

note: this post will remain at the top of KK for the next 24-48 hours.
When I started blogging using the free blogspot services, I knew nothing about what the future would hold.
Today, after about 4 1/2 years of blogging, I have a better grip on how things work.
In order to make it easier on the KK readers, I went the professional route and paid for a web designer, blogging software and a hosting service.
At this point of time, KK receives over 12 million page views a month and that figure continues to grow. Continuing to grow is good, but with that growth comes more expenses, which are normally covered by the ads that appear on KK.
But advertising income is way down, down due to the economic problems we are all aware of. At one time, KK was receiving around $2.50 per thousand ads viewed, these days, that number is down to about .50 cents per thousand.
In the past conversations that I have had with KK readers, I have always stated I would never think of charging you for viewing KK, I would stop blogging if it ever came to that. My views are still the same, but what I am going to ask is if you have found KK a useful service, one that is helped you keep up with all things hockey, maybe you would like to make a one-time donation to help KK get through these very tough economic times.
I have set up an account that allows you to donate through PayPal. Any amount is appreciated and all money received will go right back into KK.
I hope you understand the situation and ask you .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) if you have any questions or concerns.

I come here for hockey news because I consider it to be the best source. For that, I have gladly donated to help with the cost. Thanks for all you do, Paul, and all the other KK bloggers.

Gladly, Paul.
This is my #1 go-to site for hockey news. It’s indispensible.
My donation is traveling through the intrawebs as we speak.

you know, i should be giving donations to charities, but instead ill probably go to hell for the love of hockey :D my wallet is always open for KK

Another way for Firefox users to help KK.com is to disable AdBlock Plus (if installed) for this website, or any other site that relies on ads to keep them up and running.

I’ll gladly make a contribution, but it’ll have to wait until I get paid. Next Monday, I’ll send some money your way. There’s no way I could find all this news in such a short period of time without the help of KK.
That, and I love the 19. My life hasn’t been the same since finding them!
Posted by Alan from Atlanta on 05/26/09 at 09:24 AM ET
I rarely post, but I read your site everyday. This is the best site for hockey news. I will definitely donate as I wouldn’t be able to survive without it.
Thanks for everything Paul!

Paul, another donation is hitting Al Gore’s pipes n tubes via Paypal (might take a few minutes to remember the password tho’).
This place is absolutely my go to puck stop and the 19 of us A2Y fools wouldn’t be the same without all you do for us all.
If we all pitch in a few bucks it would be nice make sure Paul doesn’t have to ask again in the near future.

When you’re in, your in. I like what you have here Paul. Fantastic hockey coverage and, fun all at the same time. Everybody get’s to be themselves. No pretenders.

hmm, never thought about that. I’ve gotten so used to not seeing ads anywhere, at all, ever. one of the reasons I love this browser…but I never realized it would affect revenue for KK.
Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 05/26/09 at 10:14 AM ET
Paul, consider it done.
Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on all the latest hockey happenings.
KK has been my go-to place for info I can consider as “a reliable source”.
And thanks for giving Chief and the 19 at A2Y a place where we can “stress” together!
GO WINGS!!!

holy crap. I disabled Adblock Plus, now I know what all that empty space on the KK pages is for!
Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 05/26/09 at 10:17 AM ET
As long as this money isnt going to the Chief so he can by his wife a new french maid outfit I am happy to give what I can (which isnt much Paul, sorry. Times are tough), All kidding aside I am on your site every single day, multiple times. I mostly read your posts about the wings and of course A2Y. I think its only fair to contribute to the cause. Also since I am donating and now a share holder I am putting out a motion that we ban The Puck Stops Here from all future posts. Who’s with me?
Posted by AxeMaster9 on 05/26/09 at 10:41 AM ET
Thanks everyone who has donated so far. We are at about $500 and my goal is about $2500.
That would the perfect number and I would not have to bother you at least for another year.
Hopefully the economic conditions will have improved by then!

No kidding! I’m a little taken aback, but if it helps the site, I’ll happily keep AdBlock disabled here. I also plan on disabling it at home after work.

No question it’s worth it. A few dollars here and a few dollars there, and no one will have to do everything. The wonder of teamwork.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 05/26/09 at 10:46 AM ET
Ha of Adblock. Remember, I prevent auto play ads from appearing and no pop-up ads either.
I use NoScript myself and love the way it works, gives me a little more of user inputted options per site.
Posted by Paul from Motown Area on 05/26/09 at 10:49 AM ET
The donation has been made, Paul. I just wish it could be more.
Personally, I’d like to see a donation button as a permanent feature in the righthand column on the Home page. That way, we could send you a few bucks every once and awhile as the money becomes available. For now, I’ll just bookmark this page so I can use the button above when I get my bailout money.
Posted by OlderThanChelios from Grand Rapids on 05/26/09 at 10:51 AM ET
That’s a good idea OTC. I was very hesitant to ask for a donation, but it was getting pretty bad, costs continue but ad revenue dropped so I had to do something about it.
Posted by Paul from Motown Area on 05/26/09 at 10:54 AM ET
I just sent my money, hope it can help as I get as much enjoyment out of the Empire as any site on the net.

Evidently, since I am also now a share holder (Thanks, Paul; now I have something to make me feel important
), I agree - TPSH be banned!
Then again, what would keep us so hilariously entertained? We all know better than to take any of that drivel seriously. It just makes us laugh at the stupidity and a laugh together at someone else’s expense, especially TPSH’s, may still be worth it.
Nah.
Ban ‘em. ![]()

I’m not yet a shareholder, as per my first post; however, consider this:
Television has Jerry Springer. Those of us who are educated enough to tell the difference between a circle and a square know that 99.9% of that show is about as fake as Michael Jackson’s nose. Alas, people still watch it. To some, it makes them feel better about their own crappy situation. And that’s all that matters.
Now, TPSH serves a similar purpose. The 19, as well as some others, have come out in full force in an attempt to educate the man. Alas, the endeavor is about as fruitless as trying to grow oranges in the tundra. We still read him, though, don’t we? We’re always curious about what trainwreck is coming next. We are, in essence, the folks watching Jerry Springer. Will transvestite prostitutes be on the next show? We’re not sure, but we’re glued to the television with bated breath, just itching to find out.
This is why TPSH must stay. Because even those of us who know better have to have something to indulge in.

I agree, I am on the site at least 3 times a day. It’s nice having the paid subscriptions to SBJ available to us as well. A few bucks a year is hardly asking much. I think a lot of people on this site would go nuts if KK shut down. LONG LIVE KK!!!

Excellent idea. That way those of us who are on the site many times during a week can donate whenever we think of it.
And don’t feel bad asking for money. You provide a heck of a lot more value for (nearly) free than many things I pay a lot more for - and I’m 100% certain I’m not alone in that sentiment.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 05/26/09 at 12:59 PM ET
I would rather pull out my pubes with tweezers, one at a time, than have to go one single day without my KK (and A2Y). I’m glad to be able to help.

With as much time as I spend here in a day sometimes, not sure “hard earned” applies to every dollar as of the start of the Playoffs anyway.
Let’s fill the hat being passed around…
Posted by MOWingsfan19 on 05/26/09 at 01:02 PM ET
Happy to donate, Paul. I too, use Firefox, but have had AdBlock disabled for this reason! Join the club people… the ads on KK are really not annoying at all. Like Paul said, they are never pop-ups, and even most of the ads are hockey-related, so it’s not a total annoyance.

I’ve been blogging for about a year and a half now and have been frustrated that I’m not seeing more of a financial reward for the 50+ hours a week I put into this. In a twisted way I feel a little better to know that even the “big guns” are struggling a bit…maybe it’s not something I’m doing wrong…? Thankfully, I love what I write about - which is completely unrelated to hockey, except for my connection to a Red Wings FREAK - my husband. (He reads you daily…hourly?...but has never made a peep in the comments.) I suggested we donate since you provide such an amazing source of information to him and he agreed. Hope you reach your goal! ![]()

I’ve been coming to KK for years. I remember first checking out the blog from some excellent conversations I had with Paul RW1 at Mlive’s Red Wings forum. I’ve won a few contests here and read multiple times a day, so I really do owe my fair share. This site really is a one stop shopping for across the board NHL news and etcetera. I wish I could contribute now, but I’ve been unemployed for almost a year and living on the last of my meager savings and unemployment. If I can secure a job soon, I’ll definitely send a thank you donation from my first paycheck! Anyone hiring in San Francisco? =)
Wish you continued success and better health.

You are the only website I’ve ever considered donating money to… with the exception of the paysite I use to watch hockey online, and the time I subscribed to some adult site back in 2000 while drunk which I canceled when I sobered up. ![]()
Your website is very appreciated for your hard work and dedication in finding the best stories to bring hockey fans. And for giving A2Y a soapbox on which to piss off the entire Gore.
May you and your website stay healthy for a long time. Thanks for the good work, Paul.

Hey Paul—
I sent in my (small) donation earlier today, but I figured I’d join in here with the accolades. I check this site at least twice per day, even now that my team is out of the playoffs. Even though it has a tendency to be Detroit-centric, it’s the first site I check after reading my e-mail, even before my Rangers blogs. All the important hockey info is here in one place. Thanks for putting up such a great site.

That sounds very familiar ...
I got it. Junior high school at lunch.
“I’m sorry Rachel, but we like you and we’d like to have you be our friend, but you can’t be friends with Kimberly, too. She’s just ... well, not very attractive and it doesn’t look good for us to be seen with her. Surely you understand. You just need to make a choice.”
Rachel: “I’m sorry. If you don’t want to be friends with me or Kimberly, that’s your loss.”
(Thomas is a funny nickname for Heather.)
