from the Chicago Blackhawks,
The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that center Jonathan Toews will serve as the team’s captain during the 2008-09 regular season, making him the third-youngest player to earn that distinction in the history of the National Hockey League.
Toews (20 years, 79 days) joins Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby and Tampa Bay Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier as the one of the youngest players in professional hockey to captain his club. Crosby assumed his role at 19 years and 297 days, while Lecavalier took on the captaincy for the Lightning at 19 years and 330 days.
“Jonathan deserves this honor, he is a tremendous individual and a wonderful leader on and off the ice,” General Manager Dale Tallon said. “He has experience in captaining teams from his World Junior appearances and guys follow his lead in our locker room.”

Umm...you obviously haven’t read much about Toews and his leadership abilities, not to mention how much beter the Hawks were with him in the line-up last year....ummm....and Kane’s younger.
They gave him an A last year, and it was widely assumed that he would get the C.

Still, second season’s a little quick. Even Pittsburgh waited until Crosby’s third.

Yeah, I do agree that season two is pretty quick. Now he has this AND the “Sophomore Slump” to worry about.

Didn’t Kane win rookie of the year?
I’m sure Toews would have challenged if not won it outright if not for injuries, but I disagree with naming him captain.
Crosby was the best player on his team, period. So was Stevie Y when he was given it, as was Sakic et al. Toews still has to prove that, in my opinion.
He does, as you noted, have leadership experience. Wonderful. Let the kid lead on the ice and learn how to be a pro. Why burden him with it when you have plenty of veterans in the lineup?
I wasn’t advocating for Kane either, but just pointing out that he is not clearly the best player on his team, albeit in an ambiguous and abrupt way.
