from Kamloops This Week,
There was a time when having a jersey number retired was seen as the greatest honour a team could bestow upon a player and, in normal circumstances, that player would be regarded as one of the greats in history, not only with the franchise but also within the league.
It’s always important to recognize heroes and their achievements but to glorify them into god-like stature is a bit much from where I sit.
Case in point was the Mike Vernon soiree in Calgary this week. It took one hour to salute a hometown hero who played his minor, junior and pro hockey in the foothills city in a career highlighted by the deliverance of the 1989 Stanley Cup.
