Too Many Wings

from Jim Parker of the Windsor Star,

Holland said he spoke earlier this month with Pat Morris, who is McCarty’s agent, and told him to take the month to try and find a one-way deal with someone else.

“We’ll still have a two-way offer available at the start of September,” Holland said.

There are still a couple of other deals Holland has to work out. He expects to meet next week with veteran defenceman Chris Chelios, who has already stated he’ll be back another year. Restricted free agent defenceman Kyle Quincey also has to agree to terms.

“We’re going to have 27 or 29 players (signed) and only 23 on our roster,” Holland said. “We’ve got some tough decisions to make, but it’s a good situation to be in.”

“Dear Detroit Red Wings organization,

Just a note to let you know how concerned we are for your roster situation.  More NHL players than roster spots available is quite a bind, and we sympathize with your predicament.  We also know how difficult it can be to sign RFAs to sensible contracts.  We’d be happy to take Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, and Jiri Hudler off your hands to give you some space to maneuver and a little more space on your roster.  It could truly be a win-win situation for all parties.

Signed,

the NHL teams with more roster spaces than NHL players”

(Somehow I don’t see other teams being especially sympathetic.) smile

It is interesting to note that the 2 teams who made it to the cup finals last year both have this “problem”. I guess it just shows that depth really is an important thing.
I think the 3rd and 4th liners for the wings outplay the 3rd and 4th liners from the pens, which is part of the reason they won the cup, but still the guys on the bubble for the pens and the wings would be starters for a ton of teams in this league.
