from Scott Cullen of TSN,
Every year, and sometimes several times throughout an NHL season, there are questions about which line is the best in the league.
I take a run at that question for the 2009-2010 season, to this point, examining any trios that has combined for at least 35 even strength points this season.
Setting that minimum benchmark leaves several lines out of contention, for a number of reasons, not least of all that an injury to a significant offensive contributor often prevents a team from keeping consistent lines long enough for a line to not only gel, but accumulate those points at even strength.

This article makes me so happy. Seeing an article on TSN use goal and shot differential rates is great. One step closer to Hockey Englightenment!
Also, I do find it interesting to see second and third lines on there. Keep in mind that they may not be playing the tough minutes against good players, so that doesn’t mean they’re better than a top line. But it shows that there’s more than one way to construct a team, even in the cap era; it doesn’t have to be top-heavy.

Interesting, a statistic-heavy article wherein the author strongly argues all of his points, yet understands the shortcomings of the numbers at which he’s looking while taking a commanding but not patronizing tone.

i dont get why he’s got ovie-backie-and semin as a line. they play together on the pp, but otherwise maybe once every 2-3 games for a few shifts with bruce wants some o. they played together the first 5 games or so, but not much since then i think.
so where is semin-laich-flieschmann? that’s been their second line for most of the season, more than 70goals scored combined.

The Pen’s third line ranked ninth. Impressive even for this convoluted formula.
Far and away the best third line in the NHL.
