Tortorella On Dubinsky

via Steve Zipay of Blue Notes at Newsday,

On the first day of training camp, unsigned RFA Brandon Dubinsky was a no-show.

And John Tortorella was not happy.

“It’s stupid, “ the Rangers head coach said after 50-plus players went through a series of medical tests and wind sprints. “He’s a young man that needs to be here. I think a player needs to be with his teammates. I’m hoping he realizes that. I think his agent’s stupid….I think Dubi understands my feelings. I thought Glen (Sather) was very honest with Dubi a couple days ago---I was privy to that conversation---as a general manager and man-to-man as a friend.”

Dubinsky is making the rest of his Rangers career with Torts as head coach extremely difficult.  The last guy that did this under Torts’ watch was Lecavalier and he never let him live it down. Lecavalier, to his credit, used it as motivation to play better.

It’s “stupid” for Dubinsky not to report?  How about it’s stupid for old man Sather not to get a deal done before training camp opens?  Dubinsky played pretty well last year, continues to improve and the Rags have no other quality centers.  And yet Sather is offering significantly less per year than Dubinsky made on his entry level deal.  Now isn’t that “stupid”?

I thought I read that the Rangers wanted Dubinsky to sign a two-way deal so they could send him down from time to time to save money against the cap so they could afford Redden’s contract (and several others)?

To ask him to sign a contract for less than he made last year, and less than market rate, and allow for him to be sent to the minors when his play has not warranted it - I can see why he feels that the Rangers aren’t being fair.  And to be in camp without a signed contract is taking a potentially large risk (if it is even permitted - can a RFA not under contract show up, or contractually does he have to stay away from the rink?).

If Tortorella wants him in camp then the Rangers should sign him to a contract. Dubinsky is correct not to show up to camp without a contract. Tortorella shouldn’t blame Dubinsky or his agent, the stupid guy is Sather. You want a player in camp, then sign him.
