Tortorella Says Good-Bye To Perrin

from Lightning Strikes,
Coach John Tortorella wished Eric Perrin well but also said not to let the door hit him on the way out.
“He can kiss my (butt),’’ Tortorella said.
Perrin, who in 2004 at age 29 got his first NHL opportunity with the Lightning, which got a recommendation from Perrin’s college buddy Marty St. Louis, signed with the Thrashers as a free agent for two years, $1.5-million. That, apparently, was just $150,000 more than the contract offered by Tampa Bay, which also offered a three-year deal worth $1.575-million.
“This organization spent a lot of time with this guy, a lot of time,’’ Tortorella said. “Eric Perrin did some really good things for us, and the ice time he got, he deserved, but every year it’s nothing but a pain to sign him.’’

You know, this story has struck me as total nonsense from the moment I read it.
First of all, the writer seems to be comparing a 2-year deal worth $1.5 million with a 3-year deal worth $1.575 million. That’s a BIG difference for Perrin.
Secondly, even if it were just $150,000 difference… since when is $150,000 NOT a lot of money to a guy in this income bracket with a short NHL shelf life?

That Tortorella, what a class act. Maybe one of the reasons the guy left was because Tortorella is such a pain in the butt himself. He is a great talker when things are going well, but a sore loser when they aren’t

Huh. I didn’t know that Eric Perrin was a goaltender.

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

So now this: In addition to paying players exhorbitant money, you have to build them a beautiful arena. (Ask the Islanders) You have to offer them Sunny California (ask Kevin Lowe), an easy travel schedule (ask Nielander & Shanahan). NOW you have to guarantee the position they will play in games. So if Perrin gets put on the 4th line instead of the 3rd line, is that breech of contract?
