Trade Inquiries Revealed

It is not often you read about a team owner discussing some of the trade inquiries they receive.  I wonder how the teams mentioned below feel about it?

from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,

(Oren) Koules has a ready response to any questions about Smith, the former Dallas backup who was 3-10 after arriving in Tampa last February.

“There was an erroneous report on the first day of free agency that we wanted to trade Mike Smith,” Koules said. “The first two calls we got were from [Stars GM] Les Jackson and [former Stars GM] Doug Armstrong (now VP of Player Personnel for the Blues). Then, we got one from [Vancouver Canucks GM] Mike Gillis, who used to be his agent.

“What’s that tell you about Smith?”

much more on the Lightning…

I think the enquiries to Tampa tells us more about Tampa ownership than anything else.  Other GMs thought they might be chumps that would give away a player without getting his value in return.

We actually planned this down to every position, down to every player.

Right. It was their “plan” from the beginning to tie up over $40M of their cap space in 19 forwards while spending less that $11M on six defensemen. If that actually was their “plan,” they’re bigger idiots than I thought.

I’m just happy to see there’s an interesting story line involving owners that doesn’t make me want to smash my head into a table.

They ought to be following these guys around with cameras for a TV show because success or failure, it’ll be wildly entertaining.
