TSN and CTV Acquire the HNIC Theme Music

From TSN:

CTV Inc. has acquired all rights to ‘The Hockey Theme’ in perpetuity, preserving the song’s legacy and ensuring it will be heard on national television for years to come. ‘The Hockey Theme’ song will now live on CTV Inc. properties TSN, RDS and across Canada on CTV during coverage of the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympics as outlined below.

The deal between CTV and Copyright Music & Visuals was agreed to in principle after the CBC publicly announced last Friday at 5 p.m. ET that a deal could not be reached with the rights holders. Due diligence was completed earlier today.

Wow.  Well, I suppose that means the HNIC Theme Music Contest is back on deck.

Update 4:55pm ET: CBC adds their own report on this development, and a further explanation of their position and the status of the pending lawsuit.

Update 6:32pm ET: Ken Campbell at The Hockey News would like to remind CBC fans that the world hasn’t ended. There are bigger things to complain about.

Update 6:53pm ET: Stompin’ Tom is open to licensing his own classic hockey song to CBC.

Please explain this to an American:

Does this mean that Hockey Night in Canada, a CBC product, will not have that theme song?

We do not get Rogers Sportsnet and TSN down here.

Yes, the music is no longer CBC’s property, even though they were fighting to get it sorted out as recently as this morning.  So it will now just be played on TSN broadcasts.

While you don’t get TSN in the USA, you do actually get much of their broadcasting on the NHL Network. I suppose it’s possible that the music will be a feature of that network now, as well.

Is it just me, or is CTV slowly taking everything that is good from CBC?  First Degrassi, then the Olympics… now this.

All that’s left is the Rick Mercer Report (and Ian Handsome-man-thing wink )

It’s going to be weird hearing that theme played on TSN in the new season. It just doesn’t seem right. CBC really screwed the pooch on this one.

LOL, I suggested on my website just the other day that TSN should look at acquiring the rights for that theme song. Another black eye for CBC! They stupidly let Chris Cuthbert go and he becomes the anchor of TSN’s play-by-play NHL and CFL coverage, and now they lose the HNiC theme song!

Can Don Cherry and Ron McLean be far behind...wink

This was a really smart move by TSN!

Much as I hate to agree with an Avs fan- wink- WOW.

Kinda sucky, IMO.  One thing’s fer sure, that CBC feed across the river in Detroit won’t ever sound the same…

P.S.- foreshadowing contract talks with Brad Stuart?  Security code- “slowly23.”

I think TSN is just fine, but I’m just really really sad about this.

That song has one home, on the publically funded HNIC. Saturday night won’t be the same.
