Tuomo Ruutu Hit On Darcy Tucker

Ruutu received 5 minutes for boarding along with a 10 and game misconduct.

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

...it seems like Darcy Tucker escaped potentially catastrophic injury tonight. After being taken from the ice on a stretcher from Tuomo Ruutu’s hit from behind, eyewitnesses said later tonight that Tucker walked out of the Pepsi Center. He was on his way to the hospital for further tests, but Avs personnel told me Tucker appears to have “escaped” with a concussion and stitches to the head.

Wow. Gotta be a substantial suspension for that…

There was no intent to injure, he was finishing a high speed play. 5-10-game is fair. Of course it was a hit on Toronto golden boy Darcy (cheapshot) Tucker, so the Canadian media will have a heyday on CBC. Cherry will be outraged, how dare a euro do that to a good Canadian boy! Ignoring that Darcy has made a career out of dirty hits.

3 games for Ruutu.

The incident looks like a typical finishing check that happens several times a game. Ruutu doesn’t even come at full speed from a different angle, not does it seem like an intentional harmful play.

In my view Tucker was too busy with following his pass to protect against the almost inevitable check. Sometimes common checks result in an injury without anyone to blame for being overly malicious or disregarding the health of others. That’s the nature of the game.

This will be a suspension. Look to the Randy Jones hit on Bergeron for comparisons.

Yet Claude only got 2 games for destroying Draper’s face. Some league.

The difference between this hit and the Draper & Jones ones was Tucker wasn’t in a bent over and facing the boards - he was straight up.  Draper and Jones were bent over and therefore very vulnerable to significant injury when hit from behind.  This was an everyday play.  Someone just happened to get hurt.

This was not an everyday play or we’d see it happening every day. We don’t. While not malicious on the part of Ruutu, it’s a hit that needs to get out of the game. The idea that Tucker is at fault because he didn’t protect himself against the inevitable hit is ridiculous. Players can not hit other players when they see the numbers. It’s not a hard concept.

This was the same hit Tucker made on Kapenen when he was with the Maple Laffs.

i dont want to be cold, but his days was coming after during same exact thing during his days in toronto.

If Tucker gets back up, that was not even a 2-minute minor. This league needs to get its head examined.
