Two Games For Hartnell

from the Philadelphia Inquirer,
Flyers forward Scott Hartnell has been suspended two games by the NHL for a blatant, dangerous head shot to Boston defenseman Andrew Alberts during Monday’s 6-3 Bruins rout at the Wachovia Center.
If you missed the video, you can see it here.
added 4:29pm, from Ken Campbell at the Hockey News,
But there is clearly a mandate in Philadelphia to drill guys first and worry about the repercussions, or concussions, later. They figure that makes them “tough to play against,” and earlier this season GM Paul Holmgren intimated that the Flyers are a better team because they’re making their mark physically on their opponents.
Of course that’s why they’re better. It has nothing to do with acquiring one of the most talented offensive players in the league in Daniel Briere, rebuilding their defense corps and getting a goalie who can actually stop the puck on occasion.
added 4:41pm, from Colin Campbell,
“It appears that Mr. Hartnell was attempting to let up on delivering a check to an opponent that was in a vulnerable position,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. “However, at the point of contact, he did deliver a blow to the head of Mr. Alberts that resulted in an injury.”

Has the NHL see the same video footage the rest of us have? Complete joke.

Can a team be considered a repeat offender?
Really...I was hoping “Colly” Campbell would grow some cajones and fine the Flyers. If it were just once or twice it would be different, but I believe this is at least the fourth debilitating head shot delivered by a Flyer in just over 20 games this season. Of course, that doesn’t even include the team’s poor handling of Gagne’s concussion (after dealing with the negative impact of concussions on Lindros and Primeau’s careers). At the very least, they should be forced to attend some type of seminar RE: the results of severe head trauma (maybe the whole league should). I seriously think the league needs to produce a video called “When Not to ‘Finish Your Check’” and make it mandatory viewing for all players before each game!

Spin that wheel “Colon”, spin the wheel.... Then again after what Ohlund received what did we expect? With the diminishing returns on suspensions this year it seems the trend is to lessen suspensions with each flagrant violation. Brian Burke must have given old “Colon” a stern talking to about these suspensions.

Pretty light sentence, if you ask me.
When determining suspensions, a player’s past history should be taken into account. On that basis alone, Hartnell should’ve got ten games, at least.
It’s not all about the severity of the injury- if these suspensions are going to have ANY deterrent effect, the NHL needs to start by making thugs like Hartnell feel it in their wallets when they take cheap shots.
Way to go, Collie.

2 Games? and they wonder why the hits keep happening? Can a team be considered a repeat offender?
What a sad sick joke.
