from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
Here’s a look at the top defensemen who could be available July 1:
Brian Campbell
All indications were that the smooth-skating defenseman acquired by the Sharks at the trade deadline from the Sabres would remain with childhood friend Joe Thornton in San Jose. But Campbell recently told GM Doug Wilson he wanted to return to the Eastern Conference for family reasons....
The New York Rangers will be back in the hunt and Atlanta, which has never had a top-notch puck mover and power-play quarterback, will likely take a run. If the Leafs can unload Bryan McCabe and his contract, Toronto might be a nice fit for Campbell, whose family is near London, Ontario.

I don’t see it happening. They have too much depth to need to add on another salary like that, and I know they want to hang on to cap space for a Zetterberg extension.

I wouldn’t even want Campbell. I think he’s (yes, get this, haven’t heard this one in a long time) too soft for the Wings.
And I mean that on a mental level. The Wings won the Cup not just because they improved their physical toughness of the last two seasons, but more importantly, because they improved their mental toughness and tenacity. Campbell did not look like a very tenacious player when he came over to the Sharks and things got tougher for him in the playoffs against quality Western Conference foes.

There was someone - for the life of me I can’t remember who - said something interesting when Campbell went to San Jose. Something about how he wouldn’t find the style of the Western conference to his liking because he wouldn’t like how often he would get hit, and they figured he’d be back int he Eastern conference for that reason.

It’s interesting [in a good way] that Burnside thinks Stuart will end up back in Detroit. “Figure Stuart to remain in Detroit” are his exact words.
Not a guarantee but a good sign. Hopefully they can get something done this weekend.

London? I tell you this guy is a perfect fit for the Wings. 12 goals 35 assists next season in red and white. If Stewie doesn’t resign Campbell would be a natural for the Wings.
