Useless Trip To Toronto

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

But the language Avery slung at Darcy Tucker that provoked a skirmish on the ice prior to Saturday’s match in Toronto, was most certainly not worthy of supplementary discipline, even in the increasingly antiseptic NHL.

It is beyond belief that VP Colin Campbell would have summoned Avery to his office for a disciplinary hearing here yesterday, even if the winger was merely fined for “unprofessional conduct” and not suspended at the end of the day.

Come on. Perhaps it has something to do with Avery’s less than squeaky clean history of events. Should the league address those other threats listed in the article, sure, but I’m not going to feel sorry for Avery being disciplined after doing something stupid. Don’t want to be summoned to Toronto, then stop acting like a spoiled child. grin

I knew a lot of people that annoying when I was younger, and when I got upset by their comments my parents told me to ignore them because they were looking for a reaction, and if they didn’t get it from me they would badger someone else.

It worked in third grade--I don’t see why it wouldn’t work now.  Just ignore Avery when he yaps and he’ll stop if he doesn’t get anyone riled up.

I think Brooks is making a valid observation that if this happened against any other team in the league besides the Leafs there would be no need for a grand inquiry. Does it take a committee to determine that Sean Avery is classless and a jerk? Why did nothing happen after the incident with the Devils?

The Colin Campbell wheel of justice spins once again. That doesn’t mean that just because the other players went unpunished that Avery is innocent, but there needs to be clear guidelines. The criteria should not be if it gets attention in Toronto then it is worthy of an investigation and all other incidents get swept under the rug.
