from Jason Kato of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
Some fans may think Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby scored an assist for a Minnesota park this week, but neither he nor park officials knew anything about an apparently bogus effort to raise money in his name through a MySpace page.
A message sent Monday from the MySpace page, “If You See Crosby,” asked for help to raise $3,000 for Phelps Park in Minneapolis. In exchange for a donation, preferably sent via Western Union, “Sid” promised to send a “game-played, autographed stick,” the message stated.
“That is not Sidney Crosby,” Penguins spokesman Tom McMillan said Tuesday. “He does not have a MySpace page.”

Good job by the fans for exposing these frauds.

Yeah! Just like members of the media who can’t recognize an obviously fake twitter feed and think they are actually getting information from Brian Burke ... oh, wait a minute ...
Seriously, the incredible gullibility of so many otherwise intelligent people is astounding. If humans lived in a more predator-rich environment this wouldn’t happen so often.

We have removed many of the societal pressures for individuals to be responsible for their own actions, which is both good and bad. I would argue the safety net is a little too strong.
Sadly, there is no selective force against gullibility. It’s probably tied into some fitness benefit of communication…

The safety net is fine. I just think we need more dim people being eaten by bears.

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

You have to be pretty stupid to believe that CROSBY “8.3 million per year” Would ask for fans help to raise 3000 dollars. IF he wanted to, he could easily donate 30k no problem. I mean, he makes $1686.36 per minute of every game he is in. Heck, he makes that every minute regardless if he is on the bench or on the ice. I’m sure he could easily spare 3000, without having to ask fans for it. Maybe if he was trying to raise a million or several million he would ask for donations.
Although these con artists are scum for attempting to use charity/impersonations to get ahead, They also have to be pretty stupid, since they would have to use their real names in order to clear any checks/money orders.
The people who fell for it, also deserve it for being so utterly stupid.
