Versteeg Gets A Message & Leafs Defend Their Image

from Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun,
The 24-year-old recently got the equivalent of a cold shower when he came upon his black Audi R8 and found that it has been spit on, with some nasty messages in the dust on the car written to him.
“They were writing stuff all over my $150,000 car,” Versteeg told reporters after practice on Monday.
Versteeg said it was clear that the perpetrators knew it was his car. In all likelihood, Versteeg said, the police will become involved.
Do the messages mean it is not fun to play in Toronto?
“That has nothing to do with that,” Versteeg said. “I definitely like it here and everybody has been good to me. No complaints. Those things are going to happen.”
from TSN,
A day after a CBC/NHLPA player poll indicated that Ron Wilson was the coach that NHL players would least like to play for, members of the Maple Leafs organization stepped in to defend their beleaguered bench boss.
“The evidence says otherwise and it wasn’t because we could offer more money because on the younger guys, we couldn’t. It was a level playing field and they chose Toronto and to play for (Ron Wilson),” said GM Brian Burke. “Ron has 600 NHL wins, he won a World Cup and has a silver medal from the Olympics.”

poor guy. tell you what, Kris, I’ll trade you my Malibu for your Audi. I’ll wash spit off of it every damn day if I have to.

The evidence says otherwise
Does it? That team is built on players paid more than they’re worth and players who were acquired via trade for more than they’re worth.
And players *cough*Lebda*cough* who were paid more than they’re worth even though nobody else in the league wanted them.
But yeah, all those guys are playing there because they want to play for Wilson.
The evidence does speak for itself. Despite having one of the highest payrolls in the NHL (players aren’t going there for the money, Burkie?) they’re near the bottom of the league. Oh, and a quarter of the league doesn’t want to play for Wilson.
“They were writing stuff all over my $150,000 car,”
Boy, this Versteeg kid sure is likeable.

Bowman wasn’t very well-liked but he won games for them
There is a lot in that statement. Players didn’t like Bowman, but they also wanted to play for him. That was because he was so good at what he did. They knew if they played Bowman’s way the reward was a shot at a championship.
In contrast, Wilson may be a reasonably good coach, but what the survey indicates that he is neither a good enough nor successful enough for the players to overlook their dislike of him to want to play for him.

Shouldn’t a $150,000 car at least have a garage to park it in where the common folk won’t cast their shadow on it?

Burkie Burkie Burkie…[sigh]
You don’t hire a coach to be nice to your players. You hire a coach to get them to win games. Bowman wasn’t very well-liked but he won games for them.
