from Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun,
A 6-3 Toronto victory, during which the home side outplayed Les Glorieux by a hefty margin, was marred in the first period when Leafs defenceman Mike Van Ryn was sent to hospital with a concussion, broken nose and broken left hand after he was smashed from behind into the boards by Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos. Later in the period, Leafs rookie defenceman Luke Schenn went hard into the boards when he was tripped by Andrei Kostitsyn.
Van Ryn, who was knocked out on the play, will be out for at least a month. Schenn was not hurt.

First, I try this...</center>
The way it looks is that Van Ryn is being a little head-low, but if a normal check hit him, he’d knock into the boards and win up standing up. Instead, he appears to have the focus on his shoulders, forcing them down and forcing him into an even more perilous position.

The hit was brutal, where did he think Van Ryn could go? If you look closely you will see that Kostopoulos lunges forward into Van Ryns back, almost leaving his feet. It could have been a border line charge even if it was not from behind.
Another thing what is Damien Cox smoking saying that it was not a dirty hit. Most of the stuff out of this guys mouth is leaf bashing garbage anyway. His latest post on this hit is laughable and he should find another line of work cause he knows very little about the game of hockey.

That hit was totally unnecessary.
I hope they throw the book at him.
