From Dan Rosen at NHL.com:
[Rick] Nash and I went head-to-head on NHL 2K9, which was sold for the first time anywhere at the NHL Store Monday. He, of course, took the Blue Jackets. Since I didn’t believe him when he told me he only played the game once, I took the Red Wings.
I figured with Marian Hossa, Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Brian Rafalski and Nicklas Lidstrom on the ice, I could handle Nash and his squad.
I was wrong.
As everyone knows by now, NHL 2K9 and NHL 09 have both just been released this week. Will you buy one?

I was a 2K fan back in the 2K4-6 days, but I really don’t know which one to get this year. When I get my new Xbox, I’ll probably DL both demos and see what the deal is.

Doogie - go for 09, it’s blown by 2K in quality. If you enjoy cute features like playoff beards and skating the Cup around when you win it and you’re comfortable with the 2K gameplay, then by all means stick with it.
EA’s game has so many gameplay things going on with it its incredible.

Like a sucker I buy both every…single…year. And then I only play one - usually 2K. I was always a 2K fan until last year when I played the EA version and loved it! I’ll probably go with EA again this year.

I’ve played them both for the last couple years, and already played the demo of both, and well, everything is still the same.
EA is a good game like always. It still have many of the same faults, like how the guy with the puck loses the puck ever time anyone even touches him, even though as we all know, many players can carry the puck through traffic and come out on top.
2k is, like always, a very “arcade” type game. It is kinda fun, but also has some pretty dumb game play.
If your a big hockey fan, and looking for a realistic game, go with EA, but if your just a video game fan, or aren’t very good at video games, go wit 2k.

This is the best “gaming” advice I’ve ever seen. Thanks, Kevin.

I would have considered getting NHL 09 ...
... but Electronic Arts decided that they didn’t want to waste their precious time making a Wii version. That being the case, I’ll be getting 2K9.

Both demos have been out for a few weeks on PS3. I have played both and have been impressed by both.
However, I have to give the edge to NHL 2009 because I really enjoy the “Be A Pro” mode where you play as one person the entire game. If you’re out of position on the ice, an arrow appears showing you where you should be. I imagine you can turn that off if you want. Also, the game is supposed to have online league play with this incorporated where 5 other people join your team and play the other positions. Anyway, those are the selling points for me.
