Waiting For That Star To Decide

from Jason Kay of the Hockey News,

Whatever the case – and we understand the reasons vary from athlete to athlete – the impact in a salary cap world is undeniable: it messes with team budgets and personnel decision-making.

A club hoping to land, let’s say Sundin, earmarks X-million for him, then is forced to decide whether to save that cash and cap space on a “what if” or pursue another player. Those who hesitate could lose out on Plan B.

I’m not buying the “forced” argument, at least from the perspective that hockey clubs supposedly have to “make other plans.” NHL GM’s have to make hard decisions as to whether they’re going to commit money to one player over another on a very regular basis, and if somebody like Mike Gillis doesn’t have a contingency plan for just about every move he makes, it would surprise me.

I’ve got to defer to the former political candidate Fred Thompson and his characterization of the Soviet military in suggesting that NHL GM’s do very little without some sort of contingency plan.

if a gm is pinning their plans on sundin....well that about says everything about his organization.  Hes a good player, but hes one player.  I really want to see him sign with vancouver just to see how that plays out.

Every time I read the title, “Waiting For Fhat Star To Decide,” I think about the first time I went to Cheetah’s on the Riverside in Windsor, Ontario.  The song that was playing at the time was, “Waiting For A Star To Fall” by Boy Meets Girl.

Good times…

Oh...yeah, um, whenever Mats!
