Washington Was Theodore’s First Choice

from Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post,

“Alex Ovechkin just called me to say we have a great group of guys,” Théodore said during his introductory news conference yesterday at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. “We like to have fun, win and work hard. When he said that, I knew I made the right choice.”

Théodore also revealed that he delayed re-signing with the Colorado Avalanche because he suspected that Cristobal Huet might not return to Washington. When Huet bolted to the Chicago Blackhawks, Theodore quickly agreed to a two-year, $9 million contract on July 1.

so I’m confused; the Caps drafted Varlamnov (sp?) to be their goalie of the future, made him change his name from Semen to Simeon so as not to offend our puritan values, and they sign Theodore to a big-time contract? PS, they look good ‘til you consider that Michael Nylander will be back in the equation next season, which mightily depreciates the talent on the roster.

The caps have two goalie prospects for whom they have high hopes. Both are 20 years old. The Theodore contract isn’t long enough to overlap the likely start of either young goalie’s getting regular NHL starts in Washington.
