New York, NY / Toronto, ON (October 31, 2008) – NHL Network today announced it has reached a one-year extension for broadcast rights to games from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC Hockey).
The broadcast package provides NHL Network with 19 ‘Game of the Week’ match-ups that will air Friday nights through the remainder of the season. The deal also includes the ECAC Hockey Semifinals and Final.
“College hockey not only provides a glimpse of future NHL stars, but the unique excitement and competition of interscholastic rivalries,” said John Shannon, Executive in Charge of Programming and Production for NHL Network. “Covering Division I college hockey is an important step for the NHL Network to truly become the Home of Hockey.”
“The leadership of U.S. college hockey has continued to explore meaningful ways to work with the NHL to raise the profile and scale of college hockey and the sport in general,” said Tom Anastos, CCHA Commissioner and President of the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA). “This distribution agreement with the NHL Network will serve as another building block in that effort.”
“We are excited to once again partner with the NHL Network to showcase our championship finals,” said Steve Hagwell, Commissioner of ECAC Hockey. “This partnership gives our League tremendous exposure because it not only provides access to fans within our footprint but to those across the United States and Canada. We are thrilled with this relationship.”
“We are proud and happy to be part of the NHL Network’s exciting new coverage of college hockey,” said Bruce McLeod, WCHA Commissioner. “This new agreement with the NHL Network will increase the exposure of our game to fans across the United States and Canada and will also provide a boost in our efforts to continue to recruit the best players to play college hockey. We look forward to showing off our quality of play, our beautiful buildings, and our enthusiastic crowds.”

They picked out some real dog games from the ECAC.
Looks like NHLNetwork is merely going to be co-opting the local Time Warner (be it Syracuse or Albany) broadcasts of those games.

Soooo… no Michigan State games? Really?
ONE Michigan game?
But FOUR Miami (OH) games?
And FOUR Bowling Green games?
Wow, way to represent the CCHA guys. And poorly.
Here’s what I see in the schedule: Wisc-UND… and Denver-Wisc. And then a lot of other games that, to be blunt, not too many people are going to have the least bit interest in actually watching. I don’t see this going over too well for anyone involved…
If you want to showcase college hockey, at least get some good teams and games. It would do our Canadian friends some good to see some real good NCAA hockey matchups and rivalries. I don’t know if many CHL fans understand or have seen the atmosphere and intensity that surrounds a good college game. Unfortunately from the looks of this schedule… they still won’t get to experience any of that. It’s like trying to sell MLB to a target audience by televising a Royals-Mariners series or something, it misses the point almost entirely.
Also, we now finally know why The Highlander can’t go on those west coast road swings with the Wings. He’ s apparently too busy filling WCHA commish duties!!! (just kidding).

Primis - Sounds like the NHL Network is getting these broadcasts on the cheap because given that they’re carrying that many Miami and BG games, I’d guess its the same cable company that provides coverage of those two teams in those areas. It’s the same deal with the ECAC where you’ll get some Colgate, Cornell, Clarkson and SLU games (from Time Warner Syracuse) and apparently only Union broadcasts (gag) from Time Warner Albany.
NHLJeff: NHLN won’t get Hockey East games because Hockey East has a deal with ESPNU.

This is great - I wonder why they don’t do any CHL or CIS coverage on the network, though…
