from Stan Fischler at Game On,
• Apparently Russian hockey geniuses already have forgotten that Evgeni Malkin choked in the Finals. Why else would a few Super League teams want to offer him a contract that would make him hockey’s highest-paid player by a wide margin?
• No matter which team gets him, Marian Hossa will become the most overpaid-underachieving UFA. The Bruins are believed to be one club especially interested in his services after failing to nab the Slovakian winger at the trade deadline this past season.

I imagine there could be many reasons, and while I’ll readily admit that I can’t think of them all, apparently I can think of a two more than Stan.
-- It would be a tremendous political coup for the new Russian league to steal back “their” player that they believe was stolen from them.
-- Malkin has been a star player in NHL, and he would most likley be an elite superstar player in the new KHL (or whatever it’s to be called).
Malkin’s Cup finals performance is immaterial. He’s a kid who just got taught an adult lesson. I’m guessing he’s too good a player to not learn from it.

Maybe Fischler would like to poll 30 NHL GMs for their answer to his question.
As to his assertion, Hossa will probably get a contract worthy of the top tier of players (which I think he misses by a hair), but to label him “overpaid-underachieving” is overstating his case a bit. Of course, it is Fischler.

It consistently amazes me that this man is still given work.

I’ve stopped watching pre-game and between periods chatter because he’s one of the studio guys for the Rangers.
