Watching Dallas

from the Dallas Morning News,
The D-FW market has averaged a 1.8 rating for the Red Wings series in the wake of the Stars’ march through Anaheim and San Jose. That translates to 43,841 homes. That’s worse than awful....
Now let’s compare. In Detroit, where some homes have access to the Canadian broadcasts, the series has averaged a relatively healthy 9.6 rating (184,848 homes) on Versus.
And in the Eastern Conference home markets, Philadelphia is averaging an 8.3 (244,020 homes). In Pittsburgh, which should be known as Hockeytown USA, the Penguins-Flyers series is averaging a 20.2 rating (233,956 homes) on Versus.
read on and some additional information regarding the OT plans of NBC for the Stars/Wings game on Saturday. Do remember the times listed are CT.

I no longer live in the Detroit metropolitan area- my only option is Versus, which is not available with the basic package from Dish satellite. Unfortunately CBC, which is available on virtually every cable package in the Detroit area as well as by antenna, is not an option on Dish.
I mention CBC because it’s well known among fans in Detroit and Michigan (not to mention southern Ontario, which is a part of the Red Wing market) that it is ALWAYS the better choice when it comes to televised hockey. I would venture to say that CBC actually has a higher rating than Versus in the Detroit market. In fact, the remark “some homes have access to the Canadian broadcasts” is disingenuous (probably deliberately so) and should be amended to read “most homes in Detroit”. Any realistic assessment of ratings in Detroit must include Versus (or NBC) plus CBC.
I’m sure that bandwagon jumpers in Pittsburgh, like anywhere else, have driven up ratings there, but let’s not forget that it wasn’t long ago there was serious talk of the Penguins leaving the city. While I’ve always been a little embarrassed by the “Hockeytown” tag, the only serious contenders to Detroit are Minneapolis and Boston, the only other cities in the US whose natives populate NHL rosters to the extent of Detroit and it’s surrounding area (which is, I think, indicitive of the way hockey permeates the culture of those cities).
Fans in Dallas might keep in mind it was Detroit natives Mike Modano and Darian Hatcher who led the Stars to their only Cup.

I knew Modano was a Michiganian, but I didn’t know Hatcher was as well.
If CBC is an option, I always watch CBC. If VS is the only option, I either watch the game on mute or don’t watch it at all - although I like VS better than NBC.
Afternoon scheduling doesn’t help - I have too many errands and chores to do during the day to watch hockey, so whatever I do catch is in fits and starts, if I catch it at all.

Does anyone know how many homes in the Detroit market do not have VS? I once saw a figure that said 39% of Michigan homes are without cable, and/or VS-- I think. Of course, some cable providers don’t carry VS either. I’d be interested in finally settling that question in my mind.
