Ken Fang, a cool dude we finally met at Blogs With Balls, runs a killer sports media Web site called Fang’s Bites. He’s done postseason TV awards for college football and the NFL before, and now it’s the NHL’s turn to have its brightest and dullest stars on the boob tube highlighted.
Among his favorites: Mike “Doc” Emrick, NBC/Versus, named the best play-by-play guy in the NHL this season; Craig Simpson, CBC, named best color commentator; Ron MacLean, CBC, named best studio host; Elliotte Friedman, CBC, named best rinkside reporter; and CBC Sports, given the honor of best game coverage.
Yeah, we know: Yawn. CBC does no wrong, Emrick calls a great game. You want to know who stinks, right?
Based on Fang’s awards, his name is Jack Edwards.

Edwards is horrible…absolutely horrible! He is definitely talented but he refuses to shut up and has to give his opinion on any matter no matter how trivial. As a play be play guy he is very good but he insists on being the color man as well and it drives me nuts. He is obviously in love with himself….Fuka Yakihama is also the worst interviewer around…I think NESN just wants suckups to the Jacobs family

that no talent gas bag actually picked Mike Emrick over Jim Hughson as the best hockey announcer? Or any of the other numerous play by play announcers: Dave Strader comes to mind as well.

Surprise! Wyshynski likes and even defends Edwards. Who here could see that coming?
People like Wyshynski, Edwards, Milbury, MacLean, and Cherry are all what it wrong with hockey, not the game itself.
I’ll say it again because apparently stupid people keep forgetting: Edwards got fired from ESPN because of schtick like that during soccer games he was calling (the one that stands out is his “amber waves of grain” call after a US goal). Imagine how AWFUL someone has to be to be fired from ESPN for being “over-the-top”? No, really, imagine it for a second… this is ESPN we’re talking about telling you “You know what, you’re too much. You’re too loud, and too much of an idiot”. ESPN… the network that brought you Jay Marriotti and Skip Bayless on your TV. That same network.
Just speaks to NESN’s incredibly-low standards I guess. And Wyshynski’s.
