from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
• Remember when everybody was so high on Ryan O’Reilly and how the Avalanche had stolen this kid in the second round of the draft? The 18-year-old centre is struggling big-time: one point in his last 29 games, even though he’s still averaging close to 17 minutes a game. Should he be back in junior?
• With every contender looking for defence help, count on somebody trading for Mathieu Schneider, who’s toiling in Manitoba right now. He’d help a power play. And do you suppose any team will take a flyer on Chris Chelios…
• The Penguins need a winger for Evgeni Malkin or Sidney Crosby, but frankly, they need help on the back end more. You can’t win a Cup with a marginal blue-line, not over the two-month playoff haul. Sergei Gonchar is playing with a bad foot and their second best guy, Brooks Orpik, has a body that looks like it has been through a car wreck. Problem is, they have no cap room right now, and GM Ray Shero wants to keep $1 million or so available at the trade deadline. The Penguins need somebody like a Barret Jackman, but I don’t see the Blues moving him.
