What Happened To The Severe Punishment?

from Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province via Canada.com,
“If there’s tampering going on, ultimately there are no secrets in this world. We will get to the bottom of it,” Bettman vowed in May 2008.“And I’m no fan of tampering. And when it happens, it gets punished severely.
“A team that meddles with an individual under contract could face heavy fines and the loss of draft picks. And an individual who talks to a team while he’s still under contract would face fines and a possible suspension.”
Seventeen months later, severe punishment has been reduced to a gag order. “Heavy fines” and the “loss of draft picks” have turned into $25,000 US. And Bettman’s call to arms has become a call to prayer. Because we should all pray that the Leafs aren’t allowed to operate above the law because of their power, friends and influence.
Here’s the kicker, even if the Canucks think the decision is a farce, they are not allowed to express it, by NHL order.

Honestly, suck it up.
Wilson barely did anything wrong, expecting draft picks in return is literally a joke.

Why is everyone surprised? The NHL does the same thing with headshots, blatant attempts to injure, etc… all talk, no action
Taking off the NBA’s slogan a couple of years ago (or was it last year, who really follows the NBA enough to actually know?): The NHL: Where Nothing Happens For Punishment.

Honestly, the most severe punishment I can think of levying on the Leafs is making them watch their own team.

$25,000 is less than a slap on the wrist considering he tampered with a hockey market. It’s clear-cut that you’re not allowed to talk to free agents before the free agency period starts. You’re especially not allowed to talk about that through a media outlet. Wilson didn’t “barely do anything wrong”, he shot his mouth off and affected contract negotiations in a way that’s always been considered unethical. It’s even worse in a capped NHL than it used to be, yet somehow he gets away with shit.
FIRE UP THE WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMBULANCE

You may not care about the integrity of the game, but I sure as shit do. What the Leafs did here is absolutely ridiculous. What the league did as a response is even worse.

It’s ridiculous to think that the Toronto Maple Leafs run the entire NHL, but it seems a sad fact. The rest of the owners have to step in and take some drastic steps personnel-wise to right the ship. With everything being subjective, it’s impossible to take one league decision and say it wasn’t fair, but there’s growing some pretty obvious trends which point to a complete lack of business and sports ethics in the league offices.
