from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
The Pittsburgh Penguins have put contract talks with Sergei Gonchar on hold with the sides at odds over the defenceman’s value. Gonchar, a looming unrestricted free agent, carries a $5-million cap hit this season, but could easily command $6 million on the open market. GM Ray Shero is in a tough spot: He faces cap issues over the next few seasons with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin accounting for an annual hit of $17.4 million — yet the Penguins struggled when Gonchar was hurt earlier this season.

There’s no doubt that Gonchar is a huge player for the Pens, especially on the PP where he gets the puck into the zone, is incredible at keeping it there, and QBs everything in-between. That said, the Pens can’t put themselves in a bind cap-wise when there are so many promising defensemen in the pipeline, be it Letang, GoGo, or Lovejoy, that should ultimately learn to fill a similar role. Shero’s question is determining when, if ever, they’re likely to get to that point.
