What’s Going On With Marty Biron?

from Seth Rorabaugh of Empty Netters,

We’ve hardly been kind to Martin Biron in this forum.

We’ve allowed our bitterness towards his former team wipe out any objectivity we might display in our little corner of the Internet.

But despite our bias against the Flyers, we have to admit, he’s an above average goaltender. We’ll even say he’s a good goaltender.

He’s not someone who will help you win a Stanley Cup. The past two seasons have established that. But he’s definitely good enough to get you to the playoffs and he can even win a round or two. You could do far worse than having Martin Biron in between the pipes.

That’s what makes his continued unemployment a little bit startling to us.

Biron is above average.  Thats only if you consider goaltenders like raycroft, budaj, nittyamaki(sp?), sandford, etc as average goalies.  Sure, 1.5-2.5 is a reasonable price to pay for biron.

If the rumors are true that hes seeking a longterm contract of 5 million per year, then that goes to show why there is 0 interest in him.
He is not worth anything near there, i would say 3 is a stretch. The fact that he wants a raise after the shit year he had last year, is incomprehensible.

Only Milbury would sign him to that, and we all know that Milbury will never see a GM job again after the stupid ass deals he has done over the last 10 years.

Facts are, you could do worse then Biron, but not much worse.  He overvalues himself by 2-3 million when he is asking for 5 plus.  And should be happy to be able to get a starter job at 2-3 million.(closer to 2 IMHO).

If anything, I would say he is an above average back up goalie.  Look at his supporting cast in Phili.  Carter, Richards, Gagne, Umberger(before), Timmonen, Hartnell, Knuble, they were so stacked.  You would have to be a retard to not be able to make the playoffs.  EVEN DAN CLOUTIER made the playoffs, when the WCE was the best line in the NHL.

I’m surprised the Kings aren’t making a move for Biron. The Kings are awfully close to becoming a playoff team. He could be the final piece (sorry, Scuderi) that assures the Kings playing past the first week of April.

I think you could do a LOT worse, but his apparent asking price is ludicrous!

Biron’s a definite upgrade over Ersberg, but Biron vs. Quick is more of a push, especially given how much younger and cheaper Quick is right now.

Obviously you can do a lot worse then BIRON, but considering what he is asking for and what goalies that are comparable to him are making, you can’t do much worse.
