Where’s Crosby?

from Jason Kay of The Hockey News,

The question that niggles and nags me as we approach what we all hope is an epic Game 7 is: What’s up with Sidney Crosby?

I’m not talking about the anaemic production – one goal and three points through six games. He has played well through much of the series and hasn’t had much puck luck.

But in Game 6, ‘The Kid’ was most noticeable by his absence on the ice. The game sheet showed he had his lowest ice-time total of the series…

It was further piqued at the conclusion of Game 6 when, about an hour after the contest ended, Crosby was sitting on a chair outside the club’s dressing room, far away from attention, huddled with his dad, Troy, and agent, Pat Brisson. Why the chairs for the little gathering, someone asked, when everyone else was standing and milling about? Is he overly fatigued from the intense attention night after night? Maybe injured?

I am getting sick of the constant hype about this guy. He is a good player but this is hockey not basketball. This NBA-ification of the “stars” of hockey is sickening…Exactly when was he supposed to be the next Great One….? Can’t we move on to some other over hyped Canadian “star” like Stamkos or Joe Thornton

I’m not exactly one to argue against the “Crosby = overhyped” sentiment but, uh, it’s the Finals.  Crosby is playing.  Stamkos and Thornton haven’t taken a faceoff in over a month.  I think you’re going to get to hear about the guys playing, while they’re playing, especially when there’s only 42 players suited up per night.

When Crosby is shoved down everyone’s throat and he’s not playing, by all means, yes, let’s rail against the largely underserved and unfair over-exposure.  But, for now, let’s be content in knowing they aren’t talking Crosby while someone else’s team is competing for the cup.  That would be even worse.

But…I thought it was the young Pens who were full of energy and the old, beyond retirement Wings who were tired and run down…

So ... it’s a big deal that he was sitting in chairs while having a conversation instead of milling around and talking?

Whatever.

Well it is sort of curious. What does he need to talk about with his agent at that particular time?

(dad) “There, there, son. You can always try again next year.”
(agent) “We’ll get you a team that can beat Detroit, I promise.”
(dad) “Stiff upper lip now. Can’t let Pop Pop Gary see you crying.”

They were debating whether to announce his sex change yet, or to wait after the finals.

Who cares?

The trend in ice time is a little unsettling, though the management of Crosby and Malkin has been on the conservative side for much of the playoffs. Presumably to ensure freshness for the deciding games. Either way, it’s difficult to decipher with accuracy right now. Game seven performance and the post-season should reveal if anything is or was wrong with Crosby. Hopefully, that won’t be the case.

At this point of the season no one is minty fresh.

maybe bylsma realized that zetterberg is so effective at shutting him down that he may as well not even be playing him and risking possible injury.  he has been about as effective on the bench as on the ice this series.

Sidney Crosby is not over rated at all. I guarantee he gets a point or two in Game 7.

I’ll be back to accept criticism if Crosby doesn’t get the point I’ve guaranteed. Since he sucks so much he’s not gonna get that point is he haters !

Wow, you have really low standards.

I remember people were always getting on Gretzky’s back, but my dad was always sticking up for him saying, “Shut up, I guarantee he’ll play ok for part of the game!”

Having been down to the lockerooms in the past a few times after games, this is a pretty common site, maybe not for this guy who only showed up for the playoffs, but Sidney is always out after the games talking to his family who’s in town, and usually Brisson is there too because he has half the leauge as his clients, not to mention Geno is under IMG as well.

Also, if this guy recognized any other players off the ice, he’d probably notice that most players are standing around there talking to friends and family.

As far as the ice time goes, without looking closely at it, maybe they correspond with the few games Staal has been on fire?  i dont know for sure, but if so that would make sense to me?  run the 3 lines consistently, and with so few penalties being called, that would take away some ice time as well.

That sounds reasonable. The lack of power play opportunities and playing with a lead would probably reduce his ice time in game six and benefit Staal. Especially when that line has been performing well.

And thank you the on-site info as well.

Moq - i agree with you though, no one can be that fresh at this point of the playoffs, so who really knows?  that’s one of the cool things about when this is all over, hearing what guys have played through…
