from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,
And the performance of the duo of veteran referees Don Koharski and Paul Devorski in Philadelphia’s 3-2 overtime win over Washington Tuesday has to be noted, because it was simply abhorrent.
If there were a way to get a police sketch artist to encapsulate Koharski and Devorski’s wildly varying in-game assessments – featured by a stretch in which no penalties were called from the 13:27 mark of the second period to Tom Poti’s chintzy tripping minor 4:15 into OT that led to Joffrey Lupul’s game-winner at 6:06 – I’d transfer that image to thousands of Wanted: Dead Or Alive posters and start fundraising immediately to raise as much money as possible for a reward.
Making matters worse, if it weren’t for another blown call in the second period, the Caps might’ve won their Eastern Conference first-round series in regulation time.
Update 3:35pm ET: Jamie Fitzpatrick writes a response to Proteau’s comments at About.com

Good safe KK site. Nice calm people.
That’s just because when we get upset, instead of tearing each other to shreds, we start rocking back and forth while sobbing quietly to ourselves.
(Besides, if we don’t act like adults, Paul kicks us off and then we have to eat at the little kids’ table. And none of us want that!)

I tried to post there but kept getting errors on their page. I’d hit the submit button and it would just disappear so they might be monsters, but if it took them forever to post, I’d understand,

Truthfully, only two people have been booted off of KK. One for spreading, nasty rumors, the other for being an idiot…
I would rather have ten sensible comments than 300 ones that go on and on like this… you suck, no you suck!

Sensible or not, I think Proteau is on the money! That was an embarrassing thing to watch last night. I don’t cheer for either team, but managed to yell at the TV (read officials) quite a few times… lol
Wish the league would publicly discipline its officials - maybe then they wouldn’t make so many dumbfounded calls.

Why can’t I ever agree whole heartedly with Adam Proteau? The problem with the officiating was the inconsistency nothing else, if he stopped there I agree 100%. However, Poti did trip the Flyer and it wasn’t chintzy, the fact that several other players got away with it doesn’t make it a bad call, it makes all the other missed calls even bigger mistakes. If it weren’t for another blown call earlier the Caps could have been shorthanded even sooner. Craig Button said it best, sometimes the officials don’t decide the game by calling penalties, the players do by taking them.
As for checking a player after he cleared the puck, where is the rule that states you can’t check him towards the net or in any given direction (not boarding)? I heard the Caps in-between period analyst Al Koken complaining about “possession”, please, you touch the puck you can be hit (excluding the goaltender) that is how the game has always been played. If you fall into your own netminder after being hit that’s a tough break as well, but not a penalty.
The officiating that game just stunk, but I don’t think it was one sided, just obviously bad. Cut the number of refs in half and be more consistent that is far more important than making the occasional “right” call.
