Who Deserves the Cup? Contest Winners!

Last month’s KK Challenge to write the best argument about why your team deserves to win the Stanley Cup, produced hundreds of great entries. Fans were clearly well-motivated by the prospect of a new NHL team jersey of their choice!
Contest entries were all judged by the crack writers at NHL.com, and we’d like to give them a big ‘thank you’ for helping out.
The surprise of the contest was that there was a tie, so TWO winners will be picking up new jerseys! One fan for the Vancouver Canucks and one fan for the Buffalo Sabres. Both will be contacted by email this week to make arrangements to get them the jersey of their choice.
Now, please read their contributions. And our thanks to everyone who shared their team spirit.
For Vancouver!

I’ll tell you why we deserve the cup
We’ve yet to win it and we’re bloody fed up
Our team’s had potential, the framework’s been there
We’ve come so damn close that it just isn’t fair
Ninety four almost killed me, my house was a shrine
It was so close I tasted it...THAT CUP WAS MINE!!
But, no, we were bridesmaids (those were some ugly brides)
It was fun while it lasted, one helluva ride
But to come so close, yet be so far away
This year will be different, I know it, O.K.?
I’ve been a fan for a hundred years
and am tired of wiping the playoff tears
This year we mean business, Luongo’s our man
From the minute he got here, he made me a fan
He stands on his head to make saves like no other
on shots that have some goalies ducking for cover
The team’s come together, it shows in their play
We’re on a mission, don’t get in our way
Alain’s laughing, and with good reason now
The team’s bought his program, it’s working AND HOW
He will have the last laugh when he hoists Stanley’s best
and finally brings the cup here to the west.
So, you heard it first here...Canucks all the way
I’ll catch you cats later (come victory day).
For Buffalo!

Wide right… 4 straight super bowls with no post game celebration… music city miracle… and most disappointing in my eyes… “No goal!”
That’s the norm around here in Buffalo. Knockout punches thrown at us every so often. We live and die for sports. Everyone is a fan. My 96 year old neighbor will throw rocks at you if you are wearing an opposing jersey. She’s a little crazy but a diehard Buffalo fan. Hockey has turned into our life here.
Every car has a flag on it, every window has a sticker and every resident has that crazy Buffalo Sabres fan spirit. The excitement has gone to a complete higher level this year. The Sabres have 6 of the top 10 highest selling NHL jerseys. The team’s games have been sold out since December, with a 6,000 person waiting list for season tickets for next season. And recently when Lindy Ruff was fined $10,000 by the league, our fans raised well beyond that ten grand to pay his fine. Obviously the team rejected the offer and it was all donated to charity, but the point is what hockey club has that close of a relationship to the fans? We are family here. This is OUR year. We have waited so very long and much deserve it.
No team will beat us 4 of 7 games. We have 4 number one lines and the NHL world will soon see Lord Stanley be brought home to Buffalo.

I will be contacting the winners in the next few days.
Also, the vast majority of the entries were great, even the two word one which was just “Roberto Luongo”!
Please remember this was a contest that was judged, so each person reviewing the stories had their own opinions of them.

so Vancouver vs. Buffalo? Who would take that one? Honestly thats who I’m hoping to play. I dont feel like having Hasek back in Buffalo. It’d be too easy. We didnt play Anaheim once this year so I wouldnt know what to expect. I think a battle between Roberto Luongo and Ryan Miller would be a perfect Stanley Cup Finals.

I’m going with San Jose and Ottawa. I wish it were Vancouver, but I don’t see it happening.

I think Ottawa should win because I sent Mike Fisher a dirty pair of my underwear and told him to tell Coach Murray his were in the mail.... Coach Murray is still waiting.... HEHEHE
