from the Chicago Daily-Herald,
In a case that could send shock waves through the sporting world, the Illinois Supreme Court will decide if two suburban hockey players, their coaches and league should be held liable for a hit from behind that seriously injured a player in 2003.
Matthew Jacobson, representing the hockey league, said the case could have a “chilling effect” on organized sports, as people would withdraw from coaching and officiating for fear of lawsuits.

If I am understanding this correctly this would make everyone involved with a sports team liable for the actions of each individual on the team. I can understand a parents concern but this is nuts. This is another frivolous lawsuit. Didn’t the parents have a clue when they had to buy protective gear for their son? The player has to assume some risk. Maybe he should sue his parents for assisting him in his efforts to play hockey.
One of only a handful of things happened in this kid’s life that dictate who is ultimately responsible for these injuries other than the person who actually hit him. One possibility is the parents didn’t pay attention to the risks in Hockey and are guilty of failing to protect their child from danger. Maybe they were fully aware and still allowed him to play knowing that there was a possibility he might be severely injured playing a contact sport that requires a helmet and other protective gear.
If the parents feel their child was not protected enough why hadn’t they pulled him from playing the game? If they were comfortable with him playing up until the exact moment of the incident in which he was injured why and how do they expect to hold anyone but the person who made the hit liable. If the coaches were being irresponsible why didn’t they take him out before anything could happen? I think the parents should be held responsible as well.
I am sorry if this is a bit disjointed and hard to read. I work in a call center and have been working on it between calls.
