Who Won

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

In the wake of the Peter Forsberg trade, there will be a rush to judgment.
Some will proclaim the Predators just dealt their way to the Stanley Cup.
Others will say the Flyers parlayed a rental player into a bountiful harvest of picks and prospects.
We are likely to get the early returns on Nashville’s half of the equation before Philadelphia’s, but it is fair to say both scenarios are fraught with peril.

That’s it? That’s all Philadelphia gets for Peter Forsberg?
E-mail the Bellowing Moose
The Moose told you on Wednesday that Nashville was the front runner in the Forsberg derby, but what he didn’t know was how little the Predators would be giving up to land the player who may very well deliver them to the Stanley Cup Finals this June.

added 10:29pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

A long playoff could help solidify their fan base, in the same way that both the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Carolina Hurricanes became far more viable franchises after they won Stanley Cup championships in 2004 and 2006 respectively.
A lot needs to go right for the Predators to join those teams in the winning circle — minimal injuries, ensuring that Forsberg contributes to team chemistry. Still, on paper, they now have as close to a Murderer’s Row lineup as a team can ice in the new collective bargaining agreement, with three lines all able to score, skill on the blueline and depth in goal in case of injury.
Forsberg’s addition could be the final piece of the puzzle that turns Music City into Hockeytown - and not at some indeterminate time in the future either.

added 10:36pm, from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

Never mind winning the Stanley Cup. Nashville Predators GM David Poile may well have saved his entire franchise Thursday evening.
With ruthless efficiency that belies his understated demeanor, Poile has established himself as one of the gutsiest, most assertive GMs in the business with his coup de grace acquisition of Philadelphia center Peter Forsberg.

Themz fightin’ words, fellas.  The Hat’s comments are blasphemous-- Music City turned into Hockeytown?

Is this the time to remind all the writers handing the Cup to Nashville that the team with the best record in the Conference doesn’t necessarily win the Stanley Cup?

I didn’t mean to include that in the pointer, Baroque, really, I didn’t.  No seriously, I didn’t.

How can a team, whose attendance is way down even though they’re of the leagues best, become a “Hockeytown” over a single man coming in to help the team win the Stanley Cup?  One word comes to mind… Bandwagon.
Detroit didn’t earn the name of Hockeytown because they won a cup.  No.  The fans supported their favorite team, from arenas coast to coast, during their good times and bad.  To even consider dubbing Nashville, a Hockeytown, is purely the same ignorance as naming them the 2007 Stanley Cup Champions right now. I wouldn’t go wasting any money or time making those t-shirts and hats just yet fellas.  Nashville, Hockeytown… heh.

That’s why Ilitch had to give away cars and stuff to get people to come watch the team when they were the Dead Wings, right?

Ah, revisionism. Gotta love it.

Certainly there were more die-hards that went to games in the Dead Wings era than would in Nashville if they endured a similar era (beginning of expansion not included because of inital buzz).

With that said, it is still insane to act like Wings fans were all over the country supporting their team when Danny Gare was still captain…

I guess my point in all of this was wondering how the Hat —who should know better—can suggest a team is on its way to displacing the Wings and their moniker.  Not that I ever really bought into the Hockeytown, as it was a marketing ploy that worked really well.  The Predators made one move, a significant one yes, but the proof is in the pudding.  How many moves the Wings have to make before they finally got their original core to a point where Stanley could become a perennial resident.  After all that, only 3 Cups were won under a different economic system.  I think Duhatschek was out too late with his buddies and had few too many!

Acid Queen, enlighten me… This Deadwing car giveaway thing… was that before or after Detroit was dubbed Hockeytown?

Revisionism?  Now stop being obtuse.
