Pierre LeBrun asks readers of his blog at ESPN:
Best GM in the NHL? The ESPN.com puckheads delivered again.
Ken Holland was the most popular answer, followed by Lou Lamoriello (Devils), Doug Wilson (Sharks) and Brian Burke (Toronto), among others. Because there’s been so much focus on Burke over the past week, we needn’t bother going over that again here.
Let’s take a look at other GMs:

Can’t argue with many of his moves…
How soon we forget the great Pittsburgh Exodus of 2008 that Mr. Shero allowed to happen shortly after their SCF defeat. Plus it doesn’t take a genious to take Crosby and Malkin in the first round of a draft, needless to say I do not argue with him being omitted.
It’s Tick Tock, hands down, and no contest.

Don’t get me wrong, I just said he deserves a mention, I don’t have a problem with the others....
But let’s look at those moves....
The one big loss obviously was Hossa, in which they were prepared to sign him up for 7 years, it was Hossa’s decision to go to the Wings for 1 year… So I have to concur, Miro Satan can’t replace that…
Other than Hossa, the other losses were Malone, Roberts, Hall, Conklin, Ruutu and Laraque....
Fedotenko for Malone so far is a push....
Cooke for Ruutu is clearly Cooke so far....
Sabourin (#1 in GAA) for Conklin is clearly Sabourin so far....
Zigomanis (#1 in faceoffs) for Hall is clearly Zigomanis....
And Godard for Laraque is at least a push, if not slightly for Godard, at least he plays on a regular basis....
And Roberts has done nothing for Tampa....
So say what you will about the mass exodus, but Shero has more than refilled the shelves....
But like I said, I don’t have a problem with the other GM’s, but at least give a mention to Shero....

Actually, I’m pretty sure Ray Shero wasn’t GM, but Craig Patrick when Crosby and Malkin were drafted.
That said, the exodus happened, but he managed it, and they’re still in the upper tier of the East. No team can keep every players forever, as I think the wings might find out soon enough. Shero has done a number of good things for the team though. This year, Zigomantis was a fantastic pickup for them. Eaton and Conklin were great depth additions previously. Hossa put them over the top to be 2 games shy of a Cup last year. He’s locked up Crosby/Malkin/Fleury for the next 5 years. He also did well with non-moves like keeping Michael Therrian when Shero was hired. I agree that it’s too early to call him the best in the league, but if people are giving props to George McPhee of the Caps, Shero belongs in the same conversation.
