Why Can’t Maple Leaf Gardens Be Called Maple Leaf Gardens?

from Bruce Arthur of the National Post,
And then, every once in a while, something floats along to worsen the symptoms, and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment has seemingly obliged. It was revealed Thursday that the semi-monopolist sporting giant has filed an injunction against Ryerson University and the grocery chain Loblaws, who after a long period of negotiation are redeveloping Maple Leaf Gardens. And MLSE wants changes to how the whole thing is proceeding, including a cessation of the university’s ability to call Maple Leaf Gardens “Maple Leaf Gardens.”
So, no, this doesn’t look particularly good.
And far be it for me to defend MLSE, since I generally view them as a giant cash vacuum that siphons an awful lot of money out of this town for what are inarguably pretty meagre results. It’s just business, MLSE people will always tell you. Sometimes, they don’t mean it as a compliment.
