Why Was Phaneuf Traded?

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,
A candid Olli Jokinen suggests Dion Phaneuf may have been railroaded out of Calgary because of the loathing of disgruntled Flames supporters.
Speaking just minutes after he had made his New York Rangers home debut Thursday night, Jokinen strongly rejected the notion that Phaneuf was shipped to Toronto last Sunday because he was a cancer in the Flames dressing room.
“No, no, no. Not at all. He’s a great teammate,” Jokinen said after the Rangers’ 6-5 loss to the Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden.
Okay, then why did general manager Darryl Sutter trade the young defenceman?
“The biggest thing is, (Phaneuf) wasn’t accepted by the Calgary fans, even though he was once a Norris Trophy candidate,” Jokinen said.

You trade the players away because it’s easier than firing your brother. Duh.

No need to question the character of players as soon as they give their opinion. At least Jokinen is going to give you an honest response instead of wishy-washiness. Jokinen’s reputation is exaggerated because he was a cocky kid when he came into the league. Locker room cancers don’t captain a team for five years like Jokinen did in Florida. In any case, like Jokinen admitted, some people might take Phaneuf’s behavior the wrong way, but Jokinen himself didn’t see any reason to dislike the guy. That’s his opinion.
If you want examples of a different kind of character, look at how Brent Sutter left New Jersey. Or how about Darryl Sutter speaking two weeks ago, “We’ll do everything we can to make sure Olli is not an unrestricted free agent.” That’s just swell.
